I saw something that deeply disturbed me today. If anybody wants to take a look at it, heres the link to the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ja9_-NtdSOQ . I saw a video of cows being slaughtered in a slaughter house. Throats were cut and they bled to death. Such a disgusting sight makes me feel ashamed to be a human, to know that it is because of human greed that these animals suffer both in life and death. There are also videos where cows and pigs are stunned several times, their throats are sliced open and not dead yet, screaming in pain. Stunning merely paralyzes the animal, but they are still conscious and their minds are very much aware of the pain. Sometimes the cut is not deep enough to break major vessels, which then means when the animal is put in scalding hot water to peel their skin off, they end up burning and drowning to death. Doesn't sound so humane to me!!!!
So why are animals being murdered this way??
Is it because these merciless acts take place behind closed doors and the world has adopted a mentality of Out of Sight, Out of Mind? OR Is it because people just don't care about these animals and ignore the reality by burying their heads in the sand?
The world is talking about people getting killed in Iraq and other countries, why is nobody talking about these animals getting killed?
World in general says animals are not intelligent. But it does not take intelligence to feel fear, to smell blood or to sense death.
I don't mean to be offensive here, but this is reality and it is happening.

People being killed in Iraq does not compare to animals being killed - PERIOD. If it is a choice between saving animal lives and saving humans most people are going to pick the humans over the animals (perhaps with the exception of radical vegetarians or animal rights activists). I worked with a guy who had previously worked in a slaughterhouse in Monterey Park, CA. The torture described in this article was not present in this slaughterhouse - he told me that they used an air gun and shot the cows in the head with it - killing them instantly and without pain. I am not saying it doesnt happen, but I would propose that there are probably regulations on how the animal is killed and probably a stipulation that they are not to suffer. I am not saying that all of the slaughterhouses follow the rules and regulations but it is probably an exception and not the rule when you see things such as exist on the video you linked to this article. The majority of the Earth's population eat meat and to be honest I dont think most people think about or want to know how this piece of meat came to be. I love steak but I don't want to see the cow slaughtered and then sliced into steaks. I would also like to point out that humans are not the only meat eaters on the planet - many animals are carnivorous and bite, chew, poison or squeeze their food to death. I think hunting is cruel, especially when they don't eat what they kill. But in terms of slaughtering animals for food, that has been going on throughout history. People need food to survive and that is the REALITY of the situation. I do, however, agree that animals should not suffer
I'm probably not going to watch the video, but I can say that a lot of people don't believe animals have feeling or because they are lower species they don't deserve respect.
And I could go into the whole eating meat thing and make your head spin, but I've got a major project due today in my other class, so maybe later. :)
Ok, let me try this again :) I agree that it is cruel to mistreat animals regardless of their purpose. I suppose the reason that these slaughterhouses do what you outline is because it saves them money. Bullets cost money, as do most ways to humanely end an animal's life. Again, I agree it is wrong, I am just addressing one of the questions I see.
In your last paragraph you use a "slippery slope" fallacy when you compare the people in Iraq getting killed to animals being killed ina slaughterhouse. The claim or implication is that they are equal in importance. The killing of one person impacts many people's lives - relatives, spouses, friends, etc. While the way the animals are beign killed is cruel, it does not affect people's lives once the animal is dead. The people may be affected by watching this cruel act take place - but they will not think of our mourn that specific chicken, cow, etc. after it is gone.
