Cold War 2.0

According to various sources, including CNN, Russia is accusing the U.S. of starting a new arms race. Is is just me or is there an increasing division between the east and the west. Are we headed for a war larger than anyone can imagine. After all Russia provides military resources to Iran, and Iran is part of the so called "axis of evil". How concerned should we be?

Correct or incorrect, it's certainly not just you. A few related items --

Bush has come out against old treaties, and nuclear testing has resumed in many areas in respone.

The US Security Statement of 2002 states that the US should own space (that is, retain the right to exclude others) and use it for purposes of defense.

China is testing missiles to shoot down satellites.

Bush has decided to beef up the missiles in the NATO countries -- that is, Western Europe. Historically, these have primarily been primarily pointed against what was the old Soviet Union, including Russia.

Vladimir Putin has accused Bush and the US of aggressive intent based on the above, and has renewed efforts to increase the Russian military. A glance at the relative positions of Russia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran on the map may be relevant here, too. One might compare it with the Cuban Missile Crisis of the early 1960's under JFK.
