Violence against Indigenous Women

Sexual violence against Native American and Alaska Native women is widespread in the USA. Native American and Alaska Native women are estimated to be more than 2.5 times more likely to be raped or sexually assaulted than any other women in the USA. The violence has been concluded by the federal government to be in partial blame for tribal government authority and its chronic under-funding of those law enforcement agencies which should protect Indigenous women from sexual abuse. When some women from this group were interviewed, they all stated that they didn't know any woman in their community who hadn't received sexual violence.

Amnesty International is calling on the US government to "work in collaboration with American Indian and Alaska Native women to obtain a clear and accurate understanding about the prevalence and nature of sexual violence against Indigenous women, ensure that American Indian and Alaska Native women have access to adequate and timely sexual assault forensic examinations without charge to the survivor, and provide resources to Indian tribes for additional criminal justice and victim services to respond to crimes of sexual violence against Native American and Alaska Native women."

I wonder what the comparative figures are for rapes in other communities. That is, how do African-American, Hispanic, Asian, and Caucasian communities compare. I also wonder how economics compares. The indiginous populations of the US are plagued by poverty as well as rape, and I wonder whether decreased poverty or increased education might be as effective or more effective than increased law enforcement.

Did you know that the vote of a Native American is approximately 20 times more likely to go uncounted than the vote of a Caucasian?

Very interesting and disturbing information. I agree, I would liek to know what the comparison is. I don't know if it is all across the United States but I do know that in the western states Native American tribes have casinos and that any Native American belonging to that tribe is entitled to money from the casino's profit. This has often caused me to wonder why the areas around the casinos (Native American Casinos) look so impoverished and run down. Additionally, you would think that the money would go to build a better municiplaity system with more rresources made available to police (Tribal Police in this case), fire departments and hospitals. I am also curious who is doing the raping - is it the typical family and friends or random acts of sexual violence?
