Oxymoronic Act

How can we identify the Patriot Act as "patriotic". What a joke. Isn't our country founded on the beacon of hope platformed upon freedom and liberty? In the name of fighting terror, however and by whomever that's defined, we are relinquishing, or rather having been stripped of our basic American virtures. Scary.

Where there's an oxymoron, there's probably a fallacy. How does it work, exactly?

Hmmm, but under social contract - which is also what our country is based on - we agree to give up certain rights for protection by society or the government. I dont agree with everything in the Patriot act, however, I do firmly believe that in order to be safer we need to make changes in our daily "taken for granted" routines. Everyone wants to be safe but no one wants to do anything in order to move towards that safety.

One fallacy I see is "distraction". the Patriot act uses one act and one group of people to try to justify watching everyone. I also see "ambiguity" - the wording of the Patriot act, and most laws for that matter, purposely keep the language vague and general. They also include terms such as "And any additional measures as determined necessary". There is no clear and precise language that explains exactly what is to be done. I believe they do this to allow loopholes for any activity they wish to do and justify. They also use "authority" to justify their actions. They as the government know what is best and these are the measures needed to ensure safety within our country.

I agree that the PATRIOT Act is not patriotic at all. The USA PATRIOT Act broadly expands law enforcement's surveillance and investigative powers, which I find harshy unjust. It leaves others feeling scared of what sites they look at and what books they check out at the library. If you meant that the act is oxymoronic because of its title, then I'd have to point out that the PATRIOT Act acutally stands for Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act.
