I don't believe love can necessarily be defined or analyzed. Its something personal to each individual.
So what was Shakespeare trying to convey or express? Who knows, maybe not even he who wrote about it really knows. Love seems infinite, so how do we grasp it?
As for those darn fairies, maybe they represented that love justs happens, theres no reason for it, one may not even know whats happening at first. Love does not seem like something that can be forced or faked. But I do believe it can take different forms, maybe even change or shift.
With Helena, love had blinded her in a way. So is love cruel? Love hurts? It makes us crazy and foolish? She got what she wanted in the end, thanks to the fairies, but was it authentic and fair in regards to Demitrius's side?
OK, I feel like I'm rambling on. Time for a break.
Any comments on the subject?

Why not analyze love?
I think Shakespeare may have been indicating that love is caused by forces beyond our control. In fact, I think he may have been indicating that there are forces out there that play with our lives and decide our future for us-- fate if you will. The faeries and "sprites" (not sure what they are but using Professor Crandall's reference to them) may actually represent other things throughout life, maybe a person we meet by chance, an incident or occurrence that brings us in contact with one person or, holds us up from meeting another. I had met a girl at a club 10 years ago. I went back the next week on the same day to see if she was there, she was not there but I met a different person and we have been together for 10 years. Happenstance or "sprites", it is ours to interpret.
this is wht i think. (opinion). the movie is about love, but it's about how love works in each of us and how we think differently when it comes to love.
I agree with sharkyspy about how there may be forces beyond our control. I think that love is uncontrollable for the most part, and it just happens. From watching the movie, its possible to think that Shakepeare might have wanted to state that there is something magical about love. It can be unexplainable like the fairies, and one never know the outcome. There were so many misunderstandings and arguments in the beginning of the movie, but at the end, three couples married, and that to me was very interesting.
Very good point, again not something I thought of. The fact that there is chaos, then magic, and finally marriage - I wish I could talk to this Shakespeare fellow and see what his thought process was. There are many avenues for this paper that have been opened up as a result of some of these blog entries.
